Solar and Batteries in Murwillumbah and the Tweed Valley: Flood-Aware, Rural and Off-Grid

Solar and a battery in Murwillumbah comes down to where your home sits and how far you are from the grid. On the river flats the battery goes above the flood level; out on the rural blocks around Uki, Tyalgum and Stokers Siding it is about long cable runs, sheds and pumps, and sometimes going off-grid altogether. Sun Connect Solar’s own in-house electricians design and install every Tweed Valley system, with no subcontractors, and we see your property face to face before install day. We fit Sigenergy and GoodWe batteries, plus Sungrow, Solax and Tesla, with the federal battery rebate and solar STCs built into every design.

Our own team has installed solar or batteries at more than 5 homes in Murwillumbah, Nunderi, Stokers Siding and Tyalgum (Murwillumbah area) since 2019.

We install across the whole region: see solar and batteries across the Northern Rivers.

Murwillumbah and the Tweed Valley villages, from Tumbulgum to Uki.

Murwillumbah is a river town. Older timber homes on the hillside streets, the CBD and South Murwillumbah on the flats, and the valley villages around it: Tumbulgum where the Rous meets the Tweed, Condong by the sugar mill, and Uki out under Wollumbin. Farms, acreage and rural blocks fill in the gaps.

Battery placement above flood levels

The Tweed River set a record at Murwillumbah in the 2017 flood after Cyclone Debbie, then went higher again in February 2022. South Murwillumbah, the CBD, Tumbulgum and Condong all took water. We don’t treat that as a footnote.

For a home battery on the flats, placement comes first. On the site visit we ask where water reached on your property in 2017 and 2022, and we place the battery, inverter and isolators as high as is practical and compliant, then size the battery from your bills. If you are on the hillside streets, it is less of a worry, and we will tell you so.

Rural and hinterland blocks: Uki, Tyalgum and Stokers Siding

Rural properties. Out towards Uki, Tyalgum and Stokers Siding and up the valley, many properties have a house, a shed and a long run between them. Some have a bore or pumps. We design around how the whole property uses power, including where the cable runs and the battery go.

Off-grid. Where the grid is a long way off, or unreliable, we design off-grid solar in the Murwillumbah hinterland and Tweed Valley: enough solar and battery to carry the home through runs of wet weather, usually with a backup generator that starts on its own. We also inspect existing off-grid systems, and maintain the ones we install.

Businesses and farms. For workshops and businesses in South Murwillumbah and around town, and farms up the valley, our large commercial electrical background means three-phase boards and working around trading hours are routine. commercial solar →

Power out for days after Alfred

After ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred in March 2025, some Murwillumbah homes were still without power days later. A typical battery install from us backs up the whole home in a blackout, unless you ask us to leave some circuits out. We confirm exactly what stays on before install day.

Murwillumbah by the numbers

Postcode 2484 (Murwillumbah and the Tweed valley villages) had 614 home batteries installed from July 2025 to August 2026, according to the Clean Energy Regulator: compare every town on our official solar and battery numbers by town page.

Murwillumbah and Tweed Valley FAQs

Can my rural block near Uki or Tyalgum go off-grid?

Often, yes, where the grid is a long way off or unreliable. An off-grid system needs enough solar and battery to carry you through runs of cloudy, wet days, usually with a backup generator that starts on its own. We size it from how the whole property uses power and agree where everything goes on the site visit.

My house flooded in 2022. Can I still have a battery?

Yes. We look at how high the water came on your property and place the battery and inverter as high as is practical, within the installation rules.

Will a battery keep my power on after a storm like Alfred?

A typical install backs up the whole home unless you ask us to leave circuits out. We confirm what will stay on during the site visit.

Do you do off-grid systems near Uki?

Yes. We design off-grid systems for rural properties and also inspect existing ones.

Can solar run my shed and pumps as well as the house?

Often, yes. We look at how the whole property uses power before we design.

Do you cover Tumbulgum and Condong?

Yes, along with Murwillumbah, Uki and the rest of the Tweed Valley.

Do I need council approval?

Most homes don't. We check and manage any permits your property needs.
