A proper wall charger at home makes owning an EV easy. Here is what goes into installing one well.

Most EV owners do most of their charging at home. With solar on the roof, much of that charging can come from your own panels. We are electricians first, so the charger, the circuit and the switchboard are all done properly. For our general EV page, see EV chargers.

Power point or wall charger?

Most EVs come with a cable that plugs into a normal power point. It works, but it’s slow, and it puts a long, heavy load on a circuit that wasn’t designed for it. A wall-mounted charger on its own dedicated circuit is faster, safer and lets you schedule charging.

How fast will it charge?

That depends on three things:

  • Your supply. Most homes are single-phase, where a home charger typically runs at up to 7 kW. Homes with three-phase power can usually charge faster, up to 22 kW with the right charger.
  • Your car. Every EV has an onboard charger with its own limit. Many can’t take the full 22 kW, so we check your car before recommending a three-phase charger.
  • The rest of your house. On a single-phase supply, a charger running flat out while the oven, air-conditioner and hot water are on can be a lot. Load management can slow the charger when the house is busy.

Charging from your solar

Many chargers have a solar mode that charges the car from spare solar during the day. It works best if the car is at home in daylight: weekends, working from home, or a second car. We set it up and show you how it works.

If you have a battery, we set rules so the car doesn’t drain the house battery overnight unless you want it to. Sigenergy has its own EV charging option that works with the same system. Planning solar, a battery and an EV together? See battery sizing from your power bills.

What we check before we install

  • Your switchboard: space for a dedicated circuit and the right safety switch protection for an EV charger. Older boards may need work first. See switchboard and RCBO upgrades.
  • The cable run: from the board to the garage or carport, done neatly and to the Wiring Rules.
  • The location: where you park, how far the cable reaches, and weather protection for outdoor chargers.
  • Blackout backup: most of our battery installs back up the whole home, but an EV charger is a common circuit to leave out so the battery lasts longer. See blackout backup.

Paying for it

EV chargers are on the NSW Home Energy Saver program’s list of eligible upgrades, so a charger can be part of the same NSW 0% loan as solar and a battery. Eligibility criteria apply; subject to lender approval.

Home EV charger FAQs

Can I just charge my EV from a normal power point?

You can, but it is slow and puts a long, heavy load on a general circuit. A wall charger on its own dedicated circuit is faster, safer and can be scheduled.

How fast will a home charger charge my car?

On single-phase power, typically up to 7 kW. With three-phase power, up to 22 kW, if your car’s onboard charger can take it. We check your car and supply first.

Can I charge my EV from my solar panels?

Yes. Many chargers have a solar mode that uses spare solar during the day. It works best when the car is home in daylight.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger?

Sometimes. The charger needs its own circuit and the right safety switch protection. We check your board and tell you before any work is booked.

Will my home battery charge my car overnight?

It can, but it uses a lot of stored energy. We set it up the way you want, often so the car charges from solar or off-peak power rather than draining the house battery.
