What this means

  • More batteries than new solar systems. From July 2025 to August 2026, 7,163 batteries and 4,651 new solar systems were recorded in these postcodes. The data doesn’t say how many batteries went onto existing solar. If you already have solar, see adding a battery to existing solar.
  • Most batteries: Lismore (2480, 1,521), Ballina (2478, 982), Banora Point (2486, 819).
  • Most batteries per 100 solar systems: Bangalow (2479, 15.3), Mullumbimby (2482, 13.0), Brunswick Heads (2483, 12.3). Across all 17 postcodes it is 10.5.
  • What it doesn’t show: the share of homes with a battery, how big the batteries are, or which brands. Small postcodes such as 2490 (Tumbulgum) have small numbers, so a few jobs move them a lot.

These battery counts are batteries whose certificates were approved under the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate, which started on 1 July 2025. The rebate steps down on 1 January 2027, set by your install date: see our rebates page, the battery rebate step-down and the battery rebate calculator.

Questions about these numbers

How many home batteries have been installed in the Northern Rivers?

Across postcodes 2471 to 2473 and 2477 to 2490, the Clean Energy Regulator records 7,163 home batteries installed from 1 July 2025 to 31 August 2026, the period since batteries joined the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. Batteries installed before July 2025 are not counted by postcode.

How many solar systems are there in Lismore?

Postcode 2480, which covers Lismore, Goonellabah and the surrounding rural localities, has 13,294 small-scale solar systems recorded since 2001, and 1,521 home batteries recorded from 1 July 2025 to 31 August 2026.

Do these numbers show what share of homes have a battery?

No. The solar count includes systems on homes and small businesses, and systems that have since been upgraded or replaced; batteries before July 2025 are not in the postcode data, and some batteries go in without solar. “Batteries per 100 solar systems” is only a rough way to compare postcodes.

Why might the latest months look low?

The Clean Energy Regulator only counts installations whose certificate applications have been approved. Jobs with pending applications are not included yet, so recent months usually go up when the data is refreshed.
