Solar in a heritage conservation area

A large part of Bangalow is a heritage conservation area under the Byron Shire planning rules. In NSW, rooftop solar in a conservation area can generally go ahead without a development application only when the panels can’t be seen from the road at your front boundary and aren’t on a roof facing the main street. So the back and side roofs matter. We check which roof faces work before we design. If a street-facing roof really is the best option, we tell you up front that council approval would be needed, and we manage any permits.

Older cottages often have older switchboards too. We look at yours on the site visit and tell you if it needs RCBO upgrades to meet current safety standards, so it’s in your proposal and not a surprise on install day.

Hinterland homes around Clunes and Federal

Shade. Tall trees and ridgelines are the big issue out here. We design around the sun your roof actually gets through the year and confirm it in person. Where the house roof is shaded, a shed or carport roof is sometimes the better spot.

Storm outages. Out of town, the power can drop out in storms. A typical battery install from us backs up the whole home unless you ask us to leave circuits out, so the fridge, lights, water pump and internet keep going. Building somewhere the grid doesn’t reach? Ask about off-grid solar.
