10 kW Solar System in the Northern Rivers: Panels, Phase, Battery and Price

Checked and updated by our licensed electricians: October 2026

A 10 kW solar system on our Northern Rivers jobs is usually 20 to 22 panels of about 475 W with a 10 kW or 8 kW battery-ready hybrid inverter, and nearly all of them run on ordinary single-phase power. With Jinko panels (9.97 kW) it starts from $9,700 after the estimated solar rebate, or $10,800 with AIKO (10.19 kW). About three in four of the 9 to 11 kW systems we have designed since January 2025 include a home battery, most often three modules.

Who usually needs a 10 kW system?

A 10 kW system is the step up for homes that use more power than a 6.6 kW system can cover. On our jobs it often suits:

  • larger families, or anyone home through the day;
  • homes with an electric car, or planning one. See charging your EV from solar and a battery and home EV charger installation;
  • a pool pump, ducted air conditioning or an all-electric home (electric cooking and hot water);
  • homes adding a bigger battery, because more solar gives the battery more to charge from on cloudy winter days.

The Australian Government says average Australian homes use 11 to 23 kWh a day, so your own bill matters more than any average. We size every system from 1 or 2 of your recent power bills. If your use is closer to average, see what a 6.6 kW solar system looks like on our jobs, or read how big a solar system do I need? If you use more again, with an EV and a pool or heavy air conditioning, see what a 13.2 kW solar system looks like on our jobs.

What a 10 kW system looks like on our jobs

We looked back over the 34 solar designs of 9 to 11 kW we have drawn up for homes across 21 Northern Rivers towns and localities since January 2025, from Cudgen and Crabbes Creek to Lennox Head, Eureka and East Lismore.

  • Panels: most often 20 panels (9.5 kW) or 22 panels (10.45 kW) of about 475 W, or 23 to 24 panels of about 440 W. Jinko solar panels and AIKO solar panels are on almost all of them, about half each.
  • Inverter: about half use a 10 kW hybrid inverter and about a quarter an 8 kW one, so a battery can go in now or later.
  • Phase: 31 of the 34 used a single-phase inverter. The other 3 used three-phase equipment.
  • Battery: 26 of the 34 included one, and 15 of the 17 designed this year did.

How much roof space does a 10 kW system need?

The Australian Government says a common 6.6 kW system might take 29 to 32 square metres of sunny roof. On the same basis, 10 kW needs roughly half as much again, about 44 to 48 square metres. On many Northern Rivers homes that means using two roof faces, for example east and west, rather than one. Spreading panels this way also spreads the output across the day. We check each roof face, its pitch and shading on the design, and again at the face-to-face site visit before every install.

How much power does a 10 kW system make?

The Australian Government says 1 kW of panels typically makes 3.5 to 5 kWh a day averaged over a year in Australia, depending on location, slope and direction, with more in summer and less in winter. On those figures a 10 kW system makes roughly 35 to 50 kWh a day on average. That is a general range, not a promise for your roof: your design shows an estimate for your own roof faces and shading.

Single-phase or three-phase for 10 kW?

Most Northern Rivers homes are single-phase, and a 10 kW system fits a single-phase home: on our designs it is usually a 10 kW or 8 kW single-phase hybrid inverter. Three-phase homes (often larger homes or rural properties with big sheds or pumps) can use a three-phase inverter instead. The phase matters most for a battery: a single-phase battery on a three-phase home can only back up the circuits on its own phase, so for whole-home backup we usually look at a three-phase battery. Both Sigenergy and GoodWe make single-phase and three-phase systems. See single-phase vs three-phase solar and batteries. Please don’t open the switchboard to check: we confirm it on the site visit.

Export limits on a 10 kW system

Most Northern Rivers homes are on the Essential Energy network, which commonly limits export to 5 kW, sometimes lower; your connection offer states yours. Essential Energy says it limits what you send to the grid, not how much solar you install for your own use. On a 10 kW system that matters more than on a small one: on a sunny day with a small load, much of the midday solar can’t be exported. That is why most 10 kW systems are paired with a battery, and why daytime loads such as an EV, a pool pump or air conditioning get the most out of it. Some batteries have a charging mode for export-limited sites that uses the solar above the limit to charge the battery. Essential Energy is also bringing in flexible export limits for new and upgraded systems from late 2026, up to 10 kW for single-phase homes, with compatible equipment. See solar export limits in the Northern Rivers and what is my export limit?

Which battery goes with a 10 kW system?

On our 10 kW designs the most common battery is three modules: 24 kWh of GoodWe ESA or 27 kWh of Sigenergy. Two modules (16 or 18 kWh) come next. Households with high evening and overnight use, or an EV charged at night, sometimes go to four or five modules.

A typical install backs up the whole home in a blackout unless you ask us to leave some circuits out, such as an EV charger. See what size battery do I need?, blackout backup batteries and home battery prices by size.

10 kW solar prices

These are the same typical prices as on our solar system prices by size page, inc GST, after estimated rebates:

  • 9.97 kW with Jinko panels (21 panels): from $9,700 ($12,300 before the solar rebate of about $2,580).
  • 10.19 kW with AIKO panels (21 panels): from $10,800 ($13,400 before the solar rebate of about $2,660).
  • 10.56 kW with a 16 kWh GoodWe battery: from $14,500 ($21,200 before rebates); with 24 kWh of GoodWe, from $16,500 ($24,600 before).
  • 10.56 kW with an 18 kWh Sigenergy battery and Gateway: from $17,500 ($24,400 before).

Assumptions: a single-storey tin roof, single phase, no switchboard upgrade or extras, installed in 2026. Three-phase equipment, larger batteries and two-storey roofs are priced from your bills and roof. Your final price is confirmed after the site visit. Rebates and the NSW 0% loan

  • Solar rebate (STCs): taken off at the point of sale, and we do the paperwork. A 10 kW system creates more certificates than a small one, and the number drops every January. See how solar STCs work.
  • Federal battery rebate (Cheaper Home Batteries): also taken off at the point of sale. It steps down on 1 January 2027 and again on 1 July 2027, set by the install date. See the battery rebate step-down.
  • NSW 0% loan: the NSW Home Energy Saver program offers a 0% interest loan of up to $15,000 for solar and batteries, over up to 10 years, with rebates taken off first. You pay the same price whether you use the loan or pay yourself. See the NSW Home Energy Saver loan FAQ. Loans by Brighte. Eligibility and lender approval apply.

How we do it

  1. A free energy assessment from 1 or 2 recent power bills.
  2. A custom design sized from your real usage, with the rebates built in.
  3. A face-to-face site visit before every install: roof faces, phase, compliant battery position, switchboard and RCBO check, so there are no surprises on the day.
  4. We handle the grid application and export approval, install (usually 1 day) and set up monitoring, then grid connection (typically 1 to 3 weeks later) and a sign-off call.
  • Our own in-house team designs every system and does every install. 25 years in solar and large commercial electrical work. No subcontractors.
  • SAA-accredited installer, Sigenergy-approved and NETCC accredited.

Questions we get asked

How many panels is a 10 kW solar system?

On our recent Northern Rivers designs, a 10 kW system is most often 20 or 22 panels of about 475 W (9.5 or 10.45 kW), or 23 to 24 panels of about 440 W. The exact count depends on the panel model and how much sunny roof you have.

How much does a 10 kW solar system cost?

With Jinko panels (9.97 kW, 21 panels) it starts from $9,700 after the estimated solar rebate ($12,300 before), or from $10,800 with AIKO panels (10.19 kW, $13,400 before). With a 16 kWh GoodWe battery, about 10 kW of solar starts from $14,500 after estimated rebates ($21,200 before). Prices include GST and the final price is confirmed after the site visit.

Do I need three-phase power for a 10 kW solar system?

No. 31 of the 34 systems of about 10 kW we have designed for Northern Rivers homes since January 2025 used a single-phase inverter. Three-phase matters most if your home is already three-phase and you want a battery to back up the whole home in a blackout. We confirm your phase on the site visit.

What size inverter goes with 10 kW of panels?

On our designs it is most often a 10 kW hybrid inverter, and about a quarter use an 8 kW one. Panels rarely reach their full rated output, so the panel total can be a little more than the inverter size. We check what Essential Energy allows for your property before settling the combination.

Can a 10 kW solar system charge an electric car?

Yes, if the car is plugged in while the sun is up, and a charger that follows your solar helps. On the Australian Government’s figures a 10 kW system makes roughly 35 to 50 kWh a day averaged over a year. How much of that goes into the car depends on when it is home and what else you run. A battery can also top the car up after dark.

What size battery goes with a 10 kW solar system?

On our 10 kW designs the most common battery is three modules: 24 kWh of GoodWe ESA or 27 kWh of Sigenergy. Two modules (16 or 18 kWh) come next, and larger households with high evening use sometimes go to four or five modules. We size it from your evening and overnight use on your bills.
