The job
A Pottsville home with a Colorbond roof and a household that wanted a tidy, all-black solar system, a battery for the evening and backup for the circuits that matter in a blackout. They were also planning for an electric car, so the design included a dedicated charging outlet that can be switched on when the panels have spare power.
What we installed
- Solar: 14 all-black AIKO Neostar panels (455 W each), 6.37 kW in total, on the Colorbond roof
- Inverter: a 5 kW Sigenergy single-phase hybrid inverter
- Battery: one Sigenergy 8 kWh battery module (8.06 kWh, 7.8 kWh usable), wall-mounted with the inverter
- Backup: a Sigenergy Gateway for essential circuit backup in a blackout
- EV ready: a 32 A dedicated outlet for EV charging, smart-switched through a Catch Control device
- Monitoring and load control: the Catch Control device also shows the home’s power use and can switch big loads such as hot water

How it went
Before install day we met on site to agree where the battery would go, check the switchboard and RCBOs, and pick the circuits for backup. The battery and inverter were mounted on a dark non-combustible backing board on the outside wall, with the cabling run in conduit and the safety signage fitted. The panels sit in straight rows on the roof, clear of the edges. Then came monitoring set-up, grid connection and a sign-off call.

Solar and batteries on the Tweed Coast
Pottsville has plenty of newer homes with good Colorbond roofs and young families with busy evenings, which suits a battery. Being close to the beach, we also check the battery position against the manufacturer’s coastal rules. Read solar batteries near the coast.
How every job like this runs
1. Free energy assessment from one or two recent power bills, or a quick phone call on 0483 903 020.
2. Custom design sized from the household’s real usage, with the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate and solar STCs taken off at point of sale. We handle the paperwork. See your rebates or try the battery rebate calculator.
3. Face-to-face site visit before install day: compliant battery position, switchboard and RCBO check, and agreement on what stays on in a blackout. No surprises on the day.
4. Install, usually one day, by our own electricians. No subcontractors. Then monitoring set-up, grid connection and a sign-off call.
Warranties
10-year battery, 10-year inverter replacement, 25-year panel performance and our 25-year workmanship warranty on our installation work. Equipment is covered by the manufacturer warranties.
The federal battery rebate steps down on 1 January 2027 and again on 1 July 2027, based on install date. If a battery is on your list, it’s worth getting your assessment done early.
Questions we get asked
Is an 8 kWh battery big enough?
For some homes, yes. It depends on how much power the household uses after the sun goes down. We size every battery from your real power bills. Sigenergy batteries are modular, so more modules can be added later. See what size battery you need.
Can a battery be mounted on the wall?
This one is. The Sigenergy battery and hybrid inverter hang on a non-combustible backing board on the outside wall, clear of the ground. Where a battery goes is set by the Australian battery standard and the manufacturer, and we confirm it on the site visit.
Can I charge an electric car from my solar?
On this job we fitted a dedicated 32 A outlet for EV charging, smart-switched so it can run when there is spare solar. We also install full EV chargers. See home EV charger installation.
What is essential circuit backup?
It means the battery keeps the circuits you choose running in a blackout, such as the fridge, lights and power points, rather than every circuit in the house. We agree which circuits are on backup before install day. See blackout backup batteries.
