10.45 kW AIKO Solar and a 16 kWh Sigenergy Battery in Byron Bay: Case Study

A 10.45 kW AIKO solar system spread across two roofs, a 16 kWh Sigenergy battery and a Sigenergy Gateway for blackout backup, for a home in Byron Bay.

Our own in-house team designed and installed the system in May 2026: panels, hybrid inverter, battery, Gateway and smart load control.

AIKO solar panels on a grey Colorbond roof among palms in Byron Bay, part of a 10.45 kW solar and Sigenergy battery install by Sun Connect Solar

The job

A Byron Bay home under tall palms, with a roof that is part Colorbond and part tile. The household wanted to run the house on its own solar through the day, carry it into the evening from a battery, and keep the power on when the grid drops out. Rather than squeeze every panel onto one face, the design used both roof sections so the array catches the sun around the trees.

What we installed

  • Solar: 22 AIKO Neostar panels (475 W each), 10.45 kW in total, across the Colorbond and tiled roof sections
  • Battery and inverter: a Sigenergy SigenStor with a 10 kW single-phase hybrid inverter and two battery modules, about 16 kWh of storage (16.12 kWh in the design)
  • Blackout backup: a Sigenergy Gateway with a generator input, which switches the home to battery and solar when the grid goes down
  • Smart load control: a Shelly controller that works with the Sigenergy app to run a high-load appliance on surplus solar
  • Monitoring and app training, so the household can see what the system is doing

How it went

We met on site before install day to agree the battery position, check the switchboard and RCBOs, and confirm what stays on in a blackout. The SigenStor stands on pavers against a white outside wall, out of the way of foot traffic, with its safety signage fitted. On the roof, the panels went on in neat rows on both sections, with the cabling run in conduit. After install day came monitoring set-up, grid connection and a sign-off call.

Solar and batteries in Byron Bay

Many Byron homes have mixed roofs, extensions and big trees, so a panel layout off a template rarely fits. That is why we design every system from the household’s own power bills and do a face-to-face site visit before every install. If you already have solar, we can also add a battery to your existing system.

How every job like this runs

1. Free energy assessment from one or two recent power bills, or a quick phone call on 0483 903 020.

2. Custom design sized from the household’s real usage, with the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate and solar STCs taken off at point of sale. We handle the paperwork. See your rebates or try the battery rebate calculator.

3. Face-to-face site visit before install day: compliant battery position, switchboard and RCBO check, and agreement on what stays on in a blackout. No surprises on the day.

4. Install, usually one day, by our own electricians. No subcontractors. Then monitoring set-up, grid connection and a sign-off call.

Warranties

10-year battery, 10-year inverter replacement, 25-year panel performance and our 25-year workmanship warranty on our installation work. Equipment is covered by the manufacturer warranties.

The federal battery rebate steps down on 1 January 2027 and again on 1 July 2027, based on install date. If a battery is on your list, it’s worth getting your assessment done early.

Questions we get asked

Can solar panels go across two different roofs?

Yes. On this Byron Bay home the panels sit on a Colorbond section and a tiled section. We check each roof type, its pitch and the shading from trees and palms before we design, and we fix the panels with the right brackets for each roof.

Will a battery keep my Byron Bay home running in a blackout?

With a Sigenergy Gateway, yes. When the grid drops out, the Gateway switches the home over to the battery and solar. A typical install backs up the whole home unless you ask us to leave circuits out. See blackout backup batteries.

What does a smart load controller do?

It switches a big appliance, such as the hot water system, on when the panels are making more power than the home is using, so more of your own solar gets used at home. It works with the Sigenergy app.

Is salt air a problem for a battery close to the beach?

It can be. Battery makers set minimum distances from the coast, so we check the battery position against the manufacturer’s rules on the site visit. Read solar batteries near the coast.
