My battery app says offline. Is my battery still working?
Short answer. Usually, yes: an offline app means the battery’s link to the internet has dropped, not that it has stopped working. Tesla says an offline Powerwall keeps running in its last mode and still provides backup. What you lose is monitoring and remote settings. The usual cause is the router or a changed Wi-Fi password. If the lights show a fault, that is different: call us.
Safety first. Never open a switchboard, remove a cover from your battery or inverter, or touch any wiring. Anything beyond the app, a light you can read from a safe distance, or your own router is a job for a licensed electrician. If you see smoke, smell burning, hear arcing or see water on or near the unit: keep everyone away, switch off at your main switch only if it is safe to do so, and call 000 if there is any fire or smoke.
Offline vs faulty
Look at the unit, not just the app. Normal lights with an offline app point to Wi-Fi. A red or orange light, a fault code or a loss of power in the house points to the equipment. Guides to reading your lights: Sigenergy, GoodWe, Sungrow SBR, Sungrow SBH, SolaX and Tesla.
What an offline battery can and cannot do
- Can: keep charging and discharging in its last settings, and (per Tesla for Powerwall) provide backup in an outage.
- Cannot: show live data in the app, take remote setting changes, send alerts, or receive remote updates.
- Warranty: Tesla says a long period offline can affect Powerwall warranty cover, because updates need an internet connection. Other brands have their own terms, so reconnect promptly.
What to check, in this order
- Is the internet working on your phone and other devices?
- Did you change the router, network name or password recently?
- Is the network 2.4 GHz? Most battery and inverter Wi-Fi modules use 2.4 GHz.
- Restart your own router and wait a few minutes.
- If it is still offline, follow your brand’s reconnect guide, or call us with the brand, a photo of the lights and a screenshot.
Reconnect guides: Sigenergy, GoodWe (SEMS+) and Sungrow, Solax and Tesla. Do not press buttons on a dongle or switch the unit off and on to force it back.
When to call us
If we installed your system, call us on 0483 903 020. Our service help for existing customers is free: we start by working through it with you by phone. If you are not yet a customer, a service call is $250 + GST, which covers one hour on site within 20 km of Mullumbimby; travel further out is quoted separately. Contact us or call 0483 903 020 (Mon-Fri 7am-6pm, Sat 7am-4pm). We do not repair systems we did not install.
Quick questions
Will my battery still back up my house if the app is offline?
Tesla says Powerwall keeps providing backup when offline. For other brands, backup is run by the unit itself rather than the app, but check with us for your model.
Why did my app go offline after I changed my router?
The battery or its Wi-Fi module remembers the old network name and password. It needs to be reconnected to the new one.
Does an offline app stop my solar working?
No. Offline monitoring is separate from generating. If solar output has also stopped, see our solar not producing guide.
Should I switch the battery off and on to reconnect it?
No. Please follow your brand’s reconnect guide or call us.
