Commercial Battery Storage for Northern Rivers Businesses

Checked and updated by our licensed electricians: October 2026

A commercial battery stores your solar for the evening, can trim short power peaks on some tariffs and keeps critical equipment running in a blackout. Our own electricians design and install three-phase Sigenergy and GoodWe battery systems for businesses across the Northern Rivers, including Casino, and we check your interval data before we recommend one.

What a commercial battery does

  • Uses your daytime solar at night. Shops, motels, cool rooms and farms often run into the evening. A battery stores the solar you would otherwise export cheaply and uses it after sunset.
  • Trims peak demand, where it can. Many business tariffs charge for your highest demand in the month (in kW or kVA) as well as the energy you use. That peak is often set by a short burst, such as every machine starting at once. A battery that is sized and programmed for it can cover short, predictable peaks. Solar alone does not reliably cut demand charges, because one cloudy half-hour at the wrong time sets the peak anyway.
  • Backup in a blackout. With a backup gateway, the battery keeps chosen loads running: the whole site, or the critical circuits such as cool rooms, tills, networking, security and pumps.
  • Time-of-use tariffs. On a time-of-use plan, a battery can carry power from cheaper times into the expensive ones. See time-of-use and feed-in tariffs.

A battery is not always the answer. If your peaks are long or your load is all daytime, more solar or a change in how big equipment starts can do more for less. We tell you straight.

Three-phase design

Most business sites run on three-phase power, so the battery inverter has to suit a three-phase supply and balance the load across the phases. On the site visit we check your main switchboard, main switch and supply capacity, protection, and whether any work is needed first. See single-phase vs three-phase and switchboard upgrades.

The batteries we install for business

  • Sigenergy (premium). SigenStor, built from 9 kWh modules, with three-phase hybrid inverters; Sigenergy designs SigenStor so several units can run in parallel for commercial sites. For larger sites Sigenergy has its commercial range: SigenStack modular battery storage (12 kWh modules) with Sigen C&I hybrid inverters and the Sigenergy Business Energy Gateway for backup. We are a Sigenergy-approved installer.
  • GoodWe (mid-tier, very high quality). The GoodWe ESA all-in-one system, built from 8 kWh battery modules, which GoodWe makes in three-phase versions. For larger sites GoodWe also has its Lynx C commercial battery cabinets.
  • Also: Sungrow, Solax and Tesla. See other battery brands.

Whichever brand, we check the battery and inverter are on the approved product list when we quote, because the government battery discounts depend on it. Solar panels are AIKO or Jinko.

Recent commercial job: a 96.72 kWh Sigenergy battery for a Murwillumbah area farm, with two three-phase hybrid inverters and a Gateway in a purpose-built battery shed.

Who a business battery suits in the Northern Rivers

  • Farms: cool rooms, dairies, pumps and sheds that run early and late. See solar for farms and rural businesses.
  • Workshops, warehouses and factories: machinery starts, compressors and three-phase loads. See warehouses and workshops.
  • Shops, cafés, restaurants and takeaways: fridges and freezers that never stop, plus evening trade.
  • Motels, caravan parks and holiday accommodation: most of the load is in the evening and overnight. See cafés, restaurants and accommodation.
  • Breweries, wineries and food producers: cold rooms and process equipment.
  • Schools, clubs and community buildings: daytime solar plus backup for essential circuits.

How we assess a business battery

  1. Your bills and tariff. We work out how your bill is charged: energy, demand, time-of-use or a mix. See how to read your power bill.
  2. Your interval data. If your site has a smart or interval meter, your retailer can supply its half-hourly record, or we help you request it. It shows when your site uses power, when the peaks happen and how long they last.
  3. A site visit. Our own electricians check the switchboard, supply, where the battery can go to meet the Australian battery installation standard (AS/NZS 5139), access, ventilation and protection such as bollards.
  4. A custom design and quote. Battery size, inverter, backup circuits and any extra solar, with the government discounts you qualify for taken off the quote.
  5. Approval, install and monitoring. We handle the connection application with Essential Energy, install with our own team around your trading hours, and set up monitoring so you can see what the system is doing.

Rebates for business batteries

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program is open to businesses as well as homes, for batteries from 5 to 100 kWh. The discount steps down on 1 January 2027 and again on 1 July 2027, set by the install date. NSW also has a separate business battery discount for batteries from 20 kWh, available since 1 September 2026. Eligibility criteria apply. The full, honest guide: business solar and battery rebates in NSW.

Finance: for business systems we work with a specialist commercial finance broker, Solaris Finance. The NSW household solar loan does not cover business systems.

Why Northern Rivers businesses choose us

  • A face-to-face site visit before every install: battery position, switchboard and protection checked, no surprises on the day.
  • SAA-accredited installer, Sigenergy-approved, NETCC accredited, with a 25-year workmanship warranty on our installation work (commercial jobs included).

Questions we get asked

What is a commercial battery (BESS)?

A battery energy storage system (BESS) for a business: battery modules, a hybrid or battery inverter and an energy management system. It stores solar or off-peak power and gives it back when your site needs it, for example in the evening, at peak times or in a blackout.

Can a battery reduce my demand charges?

Sometimes. A battery can cover short, predictable peaks if it is sized and programmed for them. Long peaks would need a very large battery, and sometimes staggering big motor starts is the cheaper answer. We check your interval data and tariff and tell you which it is.

What size battery does a business need?

It depends on your evening load, your peaks, what you want backed up and your tariff. We size it from your half-hourly interval data and bills, not from a package list. Business systems usually need a three-phase battery inverter.

Will a business battery keep us running in a blackout?

It can, if it is installed with a backup gateway or backup circuits. We agree with you what stays on, the whole site or critical loads such as cool rooms, tills, networking and security, and size the battery and inverter for it.

Is there a rebate for business batteries?

Yes. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program applies to business premises as well as homes, for batteries from 5 to 100 kWh, and steps down on 1 January 2027. NSW also has a separate business battery discount from 1 September 2026. Eligibility criteria apply: see our business rebates guide.

Do you install commercial batteries in Casino?

Yes. Casino and the Richmond Valley are within our commercial service area, along with the rest of the Northern Rivers.
