Black Jinko solar panels on a light Colorbond roof in Goonellabah, part of a 12.32 kW solar and Sigenergy battery install by Sun Connect Solar

The job

A Goonellabah home on the hill above Lismore, with a light-coloured Colorbond roof and solar already on it. The household wanted a lot more generation, a big battery for the evening and night, and backup when the grid goes down. Rather than discard the existing solar, the design added a new Jinko array and used the Sigenergy Gateway to bring the older system into the new set-up.

What we installed

  • Solar: 28 black Jinko Tiger Neo panels (440 W each), 12.32 kW in total
  • Battery and inverter: a Sigenergy SigenStor with a single-phase hybrid inverter and three battery modules, about 24 kWh of storage (24.18 kWh in the design)
  • Blackout backup: a Sigenergy Gateway with a generator input, for home backup and automatic switching
  • Existing solar: upgraded to hybrid operation through the Gateway, so it can keep generating in a blackout
  • Smart load control with a Shelly controller, plus monitoring and app training

How it went

Before install day we met on site to agree the battery position, check the switchboard and RCBOs, and work out how the existing solar would connect. The SigenStor stands on the floor against a brick wall, with the cabling in conduit and the safety signage fitted. The new panels went on in neat rows on the Colorbond, clear of the vents and roof edges. Then came monitoring set-up, grid connection and a sign-off call.

Adding to solar you already have

Many homes around Lismore already have solar that still works but is too small for a big battery. If the old panels are in good order, keeping them and adding new ones is often the sensible path. Read adding a battery to existing solar.

How every job like this runs

1. Free energy assessment from one or two recent power bills, or a quick phone call on 0483 903 020.

2. Custom design sized from the household’s real usage, with the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate and solar STCs taken off at point of sale. We handle the paperwork. See your rebates or try the battery rebate calculator.

3. Face-to-face site visit before install day: compliant battery position, switchboard and RCBO check, and agreement on what stays on in a blackout. No surprises on the day.

4. Install, usually one day, by our own electricians. No subcontractors. Then monitoring set-up, grid connection and a sign-off call.

Warranties

10-year battery, 10-year inverter replacement, 25-year panel performance and our 25-year workmanship warranty on our installation work. Equipment is covered by the manufacturer warranties.

The federal battery rebate steps down on 1 January 2027 and again on 1 July 2027, based on install date. If a battery is on your list, it’s worth getting your assessment done early.

Questions we get asked

Can my old solar keep working in a blackout?

On this job, yes. The Sigenergy Gateway upgraded the home’s existing solar to hybrid operation, so it can keep generating during a blackout and works with the new battery. Whether that suits your existing inverter is something we check on the site visit. See will my old inverter work with a battery.

Why a 24 kWh battery?

It was sized from the household’s own power bills: enough storage to carry the evening and overnight use. Sigenergy batteries are built from modules, three here, so a battery can be sized to the home. See battery sizing.

Do you install on hillside homes in Goonellabah?

Yes. Goonellabah has plenty of homes on slopes and split levels. We check roof access, pitch and shading on the site visit and plan the install day around it.

What does the Gateway generator input do?

It lets a generator be connected to the system later if the household ever wants one for long outages. The Gateway handles the switching between grid, battery and generator.
