Is off-grid solar legal in NSW? What approvals and checks apply
Checked and updated by our licensed electricians: October 2026
Off-grid solar is a normal way to power a rural property, and we install off-grid systems across the Northern Rivers. The rules that matter depend on your block, so this is a checklist of what to confirm before you build, not legal advice. We work through it with you at the free site visit.

The checklist
- Licensed electrical work: the electrical work should be done by a licensed electrician, and you should receive the electrical safety paperwork for your state. The government lists an electrical safety certificate or equivalent among the documents you should get after an install. We are a fully licensed NSW electrical contractor and an SAA-accredited installer.
- Council and planning: whether a ground-mounted array, a battery shed or a generator shed needs approval depends on your land zoning, the size and position, and your council. Ask your council early; we tell you what we need to see before we design.
- Battery position: batteries have strict installation rules, including wall material and distances from habitable spaces, doors and windows. See where a battery can be installed.
- Fire and access: keep battery and generator positions accessible and clear of vegetation. We check this on site.
- Generator: fuel storage, noise and exhaust are part of the design if you include one.
- Insurance: tell your insurer you are adding a solar and battery system or going off-grid.
- Existing grid connection: if you are connected now and plan to disconnect, talk to your electricity retailer and the network about how and when. We help with the steps.
- Rebates: do not assume the usual federal solar or battery rebates apply to an off-grid system. They are set up around eligible installations, so we check your exact system before showing a price.
Is it legal?
There is no rule that you must be on the grid. What matters is that the work is safe, done by licensed people, and meets any planning requirements for your land. If you tell us your address and what you want to build, we tell you what we know and what to confirm with council.

Questions we get asked
Is off-grid solar legal in NSW?
There is no requirement to be connected to the grid. The work must be safe and done by licensed electricians, and planning rules for structures on your land still apply.
Do I need council approval for off-grid solar?
It depends on what you build and where. Roof-mounted panels on an existing home are different from a ground array or a battery shed. Check with your council and tell us your address.
Do off-grid systems get the federal rebates?
Do not assume so. We check your exact system and tell you before you commit.
Who handles the paperwork?
We do for the electrical side. Council and insurer questions are yours, and we help you ask the right ones.
