Where can a home battery be installed? Location rules and what we check

There are specific rules about where a home battery can go, covering the wall it hangs on and the distance from habitable spaces, doors and windows. We check the position at the free site visit before any install, so the battery goes somewhere compliant and sensible.

What the rules cover

The Australian Government says there are specific rules about where a battery can be installed, including restrictions on the wall material it is attached to and minimum distances from habitable spaces, doors and windows. The exact distances depend on the standard, your battery and your building, so we confirm them on site rather than quote a number here.

What we look at on the site visit

  • Wall material and strength, and whether the wall is suitable.
  • Distance from doors, windows and living areas.
  • Weather exposure and water paths, and the manufacturer’s clearances for ventilation.
  • Access for you and for service, and protection from vehicle knocks, for example a bollard in a driveway or garage.
  • Run to the switchboard and the switchboard itself, including RCBO upgrades.
  • Whether the home needs whole-home or essential-circuits backup. See whole-home vs essential circuits.

Why a remote quote can go wrong

If a battery position is not compliant, the install can stop on the day or cost more to relocate. That is why we visit first: no hidden surprises or extra costs on install day.

Your installer must also be licensed and accredited for battery work. We are SAA-accredited and a fully licensed NSW electrical contractor.

For weather questions, see our guide to battery IP ratings, storms and floods.

Questions we get asked

Can a battery go in the garage?

Possibly, if the position meets the rules and the manufacturer’s requirements. We confirm on the site visit.

Can a battery go outside?

Many batteries are designed for outdoor installation. Check the model’s rating and manufacturer instructions; see our IP rating guide.

Can I put it on any wall?

No. The Australian Government notes restrictions on the wall material. We check it.

Do I need to be there for the site visit?

Yes, it is a face-to-face visit so we can agree the position with you.
