Sigenergy FAQ: Gateway, internet connection and outdoor installation

Short answer. The Gateway is what lets a SigenStor back up your home in a blackout. Sigenergy recommends Ethernet or Wi-Fi for communication, and the app needs a connection for monitoring. The equipment can be installed indoors or outdoors, in a sheltered position, subject to local rules.

Safety first. Never open a switchboard, remove a cover from your battery or inverter, or touch any wiring. Anything beyond the app, a light you can read from a safe distance, or your own router is a job for a licensed electrician. If you see smoke, smell burning, hear arcing or see water on or near the unit: keep everyone away, switch off at your main switch only if it is safe to do so, and call 000 if there is any fire or smoke.

What does the Sigenergy Gateway do?

Sigenergy’s manual shows the Gateway in its whole-home and partial-home backup networks. It is part of the set-up that lets the system keep your backup loads running when the grid is down, and it is needed to set a Backup Reserve in the mySigen app. A diesel generator can work with the Gateway for long-term off-grid use. See what happens in a blackout with a Sigenergy battery and Backup Reserve.

Does Sigenergy need an internet connection?

Sigenergy recommends Ethernet and Wi-Fi for communication between the inverter and your router. It also offers a 4G communication module, whose free data the manual says is for a single device and valid for 2 years. The mySigen app needs a connection to show live data. The manual does not describe every function offline, so if your internet is unreliable, tell us and we will plan the communications. Switchover in a blackout is done by the Gateway and equipment, not the app. See how to reconnect to Wi-Fi.

Can a Sigenergy be installed outside?

Yes. The manual says the equipment supports both indoor and outdoor installation, subject to local laws and regulations, and it should be installed in a sheltered place. Rules from the manual we follow:

  • Install it horizontally and not where children can easily touch it, and away from damp or fire.
  • Not in a spot where a car passes in a garage, to avoid collision.
  • On a solid mounting surface, preferably brick, concrete or ground, not a flammable one.
  • With room around it and, indoors, enough ventilation so the room does not warm by more than 3 degrees.
  • Maximum operating range -20 to 55 degrees; best performance between 10 and 35.

What about cold weather and heat?

When the battery pack is below 0 degrees, charging is not immediate and the heating feature switches on automatically, using some power. Above 40 degrees the manual says the equipment may derate its output and its service life may shorten. Northern Rivers winters are rarely that cold, so this matters most in high hinterland spots.

Coastal homes: a check we make

Both makers flag salt air. GoodWe’s manual says to consult the manufacturer before installing outdoors in a salt-damage area, which it describes as within about 500 metres of the coastline. Sigenergy’s manual says to install at least 500 metres from corrosion sources such as the seaside. Many Northern Rivers homes are near the coast, so we check your exact position at the site visit and talk through the options, rather than assume.

Quick questions

Do I need the Gateway?

You need it for blackout backup and to set Backup Reserve. A system without backup may not use one.

What if my Wi-Fi is weak where the battery is?

Ethernet is recommended. We can run a cable or add an access point at install.

Is the Sigenergy waterproof?

The manual says it is suitable for outdoor use in a sheltered place; check the datasheet for the model’s rating. See our IP rating guide.

Does the Sigenergy have an app?

Yes, mySigen. See our mySigen guides.
