From old solar to solar and a battery

This brick home already had an older solar system. It came off at no charge, and in its place went 22 Jinko panels across two faces of the grey Colorbond roof, a Sungrow hybrid inverter and a three-module SBR battery. The system was set up so the essential circuits keep running from the battery when the grid goes down.

Under the carport

The inverter is mounted on the brick wall under the carport roof, with the battery stack on the slab below it: sheltered, level and close to where the cables run into the house.

Questions we get asked

What are essential loads?

Is a carport a good battery spot?

Often, yes: it is under cover and close to the house. A car-impact barrier may be needed. See where a home battery can be installed.

Can I add to a Sungrow SBR battery?

What happened to the old panels?
