27.4 kW AIKO Solar and a 50 kWh Three-Phase Sigenergy Battery near Mullumbimby: Case Study

Fifty-nine all-black AIKO panels (27.4 kW), a 15 kW three-phase Sigenergy controller, a battery of about 50 kWh, a Sigenergy Gateway with generator input, the existing carport and shed solar tied in, and smart load control for the pool pump, on a hinterland property near Mullumbimby.

Our own in-house team designed and installed the system in July 2026.

A big property, pulled into one system

This property sits in the hills between Mullumbimby and Byron Bay, with a tile-roofed home, a pool, a carport and a shed, and older solar spread over several roofs. The design kept the useful parts: the existing Sungrow inverters on the carport and shed were upgraded to run through the Sigenergy Gateway, and the oldest panels came off for proper disposal. Then came 59 new AIKO panels across the house roofs and a tall three-phase battery stack of about 50 kWh.

System details

  • Solar: 59 all-black AIKO Neostar panels (465 W each), 27.435 kW
  • Energy controller: a 15 kW three-phase Sigenergy SigenStor controller
  • Battery: Sigenergy battery modules, about 50 kWh (50.32 kWh)
  • Blackout backup: a Sigenergy Gateway with generator input
  • Existing Sungrow inverters on the carport and shed solar kept and tied in
  • Shelly smart load controller for the pool pump; old panels removed and disposed of

On the roofs

The new panels run in long rows on the dark tile roofs and in a block on the low roof above the pool, all looking out over the garden and the valley. The battery stack stands under cover against a rendered wall.

Big systems in the hills

Acreage between Mullumbimby and Byron often means big roofs, sheds, pools and long rural lines, so large batteries are common. More: a 54 kWh Sigenergy battery in the Mullumbimby hinterland and a 27 kWh Sigenergy battery at Mullumbimby Creek.

How every job like this runs

1. Free energy assessment from one or two recent power bills, or a quick phone call on 0483 903 020.

2. Custom design sized from the household’s real usage, with the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate and solar STCs taken off at point of sale. We handle the paperwork. See your rebates or try the battery rebate calculator.

3. Face-to-face site visit before install day: compliant battery position, switchboard and RCBO check, and agreement on what stays on in a blackout. No surprises on the day.

4. Install, usually one day, by our own electricians. No subcontractors. Then monitoring set-up, grid connection and a sign-off call.

Warranties

Every new install from us now comes with a 10-year battery warranty, 10-year inverter replacement, 25-year panel performance and our 25-year workmanship warranty on our installation work. Equipment is covered by the manufacturer warranties.

The federal battery rebate steps down on 1 January 2027 and again on 1 July 2027, based on install date. If a battery is on your list, it’s worth getting your assessment done early.

Questions we get asked

Can existing inverters stay when a big battery goes in?

Yes. On this property the existing Sungrow inverters on the carport and shed solar stayed, upgraded through the Sigenergy Gateway so their solar works with the battery and in blackouts. Old panels that had done their time came off.

Why a three-phase battery system?

The property has three-phase power and big loads. A 15 kW three-phase Sigenergy controller spreads power across all phases. See single-phase vs three-phase.

Can the pool pump run on solar?

Yes. A Shelly smart load controller lets the Sigenergy system run the pool pump when there is spare solar, and shows what it uses in the app.

What happens when the grid goes down?

The Sigenergy Gateway switches the home over to the battery and solar. A typical install backs up the whole home unless you ask us to leave circuits out. See blackout backup batteries.
