All-black AIKO solar panels on a curved corrugated roof surrounded by trees at Mullumbimby Creek, installed by Sun Connect Solar

The job

A home at Mullumbimby Creek, just out of Mullumbimby, with a curved corrugated roof surrounded by tall trees. The household wanted a big battery for the evening and night and backup when the power goes out. The battery went on a raised base under cover, with a backing board and two bollards, and the panels went on the curved roof.

What we installed

  • Solar: 18 all-black AIKO Neostar panels (465 W each), 8.37 kW in total
  • Battery and inverter: a Sigenergy SigenStor with an 8 kW single-phase hybrid inverter and three battery modules, about 27 kWh of storage (27.12 kWh in the design)
  • Blackout backup: a Sigenergy Gateway with a generator input
  • Battery base: a formply backing section, and the battery raised on blocks and a paver, as agreed on site, with two steel bollards in front
  • Smart load control with a Shelly controller, plus monitoring and app training

How it went

We met on site before install day to agree the battery position and base, check the switchboard and RCBOs, and confirm what stays on in a blackout. The SigenStor now sits up off the ground against its backing board, under the eaves, with the safety signage fitted and the bollards in place. On the roof, the panels follow the curve in neat rows. Then came monitoring set-up, grid connection and a sign-off call.

How every job like this runs

1. Free energy assessment from one or two recent power bills, or a quick phone call on 0483 903 020.

2. Custom design sized from the household’s real usage, with the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate and solar STCs taken off at point of sale. We handle the paperwork. See your rebates or try the battery rebate calculator.

3. Face-to-face site visit before install day: compliant battery position, switchboard and RCBO check, and agreement on what stays on in a blackout. No surprises on the day.

4. Install, usually one day, by our own electricians. No subcontractors. Then monitoring set-up, grid connection and a sign-off call.

Warranties

10-year battery, 10-year inverter replacement, 25-year panel performance and our 25-year workmanship warranty on our installation work. Equipment is covered by the manufacturer warranties.

The federal battery rebate steps down on 1 January 2027 and again on 1 July 2027, based on install date. If a battery is on your list, it’s worth getting your assessment done early.

Questions we get asked

Why is the battery raised on blocks?

On this job we built a formply backing section and raised the battery on blocks and a paver, as agreed on the site visit, to keep it up off the ground. Where a battery may go is set by the Australian battery standard and the manufacturer. See where a home battery can be installed.

Can solar go on a curved roof?

Yes. On this home the panels follow the curve of the corrugated roof in short rows. We check the roof shape, fixings and shading from trees on the site visit before we design.

Why 27 kWh?

It was sized from the household’s own power bills to carry the evening and night. Sigenergy batteries are built from modules, three on this job, and more can be added later. See battery sizing.

What happens when the grid goes down?

The Sigenergy Gateway switches the home over to the battery and solar. A typical install backs up the whole home unless you ask us to leave circuits out. See blackout backup batteries.
