Commercial solar: how it works and whether it is worth it for your business

Checked and updated by our licensed electricians: October 2026

Commercial solar pays when your business uses a lot of power while the sun is up. We design and install commercial systems up to 1 MW for businesses across the Northern Rivers and as far as Casino, with our own electricians. Here is how it works and how to judge whether it is worth it for you.

Commercial rooftop solar system in the Northern Rivers NSW by Sun Connect Solar, local commercial solar installers

How it works

Panels on the roof or ground generate power while the sun is up, your business uses it first, and any extra is exported if your plan pays for it. The Australian Government notes some businesses, especially high users, may not get a plan that credits exports, so it can make sense to size a system so most of the generation is used on site. Its SunSPOT calculator suggests, for businesses with high electricity use, the biggest system that allows at least 80% of generation to be self-consumed.

What decides whether it is worth it

  • How much electricity you use, and when: daytime use suits solar.
  • The price you pay for electricity, and whether your plan has demand charges.
  • Available roof area, roof condition and shading, and any limits from your network.
  • Site challenges: steep roofs, difficult access, multi-storey buildings.
  • Extras: switchboard upgrades, rack mounting, extended cabling.
  • Whether a battery makes sense: the government notes batteries have a high upfront cost and can lengthen payback for businesses, but can reduce demand charges and provide backup. See commercial battery storage.

How we do it

  • A free energy assessment from your bills and trading hours.
  • A face-to-face site visit before any install.
  • Design by us, installed by our own electricians, no subcontractors.
  • Commercial systems up to 1 MW, with a 25-year workmanship warranty.
  • Grid application and rebate paperwork handled.

Businesses may also qualify for tax incentives; the government suggests speaking to your accountant. We do not give tax advice. Commercial finance can be arranged through a finance broker; the NSW household 0% loan does not apply to commercial jobs. What each rebate really gives: business solar and battery rebates in NSW.
