Is a home battery worth it? How to decide, from a Northern Rivers electrician
It depends on your bills, your solar and what a blackout would cost you. The Australian Government’s own advice is that for many homes the cost of a battery may outweigh the bill savings, so a battery is worth it when you have a reason beyond the bill, or when your usage suits one. We work it out from your real power bills, with no pressure.

What a battery actually does
- Stores the solar your home makes in the day so you can use it at night, instead of sending it to the grid for a small feed-in credit.
- Can keep your home running in a blackout, if it is set up for backup. Not every battery is. See blackout backup batteries.
- Can help you take advantage of time-of-use tariffs, by charging when power is cheap and using it when it is expensive.
- Can let you join a virtual power plant if you choose to (optional).
When a battery tends to make sense
- You already have solar that sends a lot of power to the grid in the middle of the day.
- You use most of your power in the evening and overnight.
- Blackouts matter to you: medical equipment, a home business, a well pump, or simply living where the grid drops out.
- You are on a time-of-use plan with a big gap between peak and off-peak rates.
When it may not
The Australian Government says a battery will not pay back its upfront cost as fast as a solar-only system and may not even pay itself off within its lifetime, and that a battery is only useful if there is spare solar to store. If you have a small solar system, or use most of your power during the day, a battery may add little. We will tell you that at the free assessment rather than sell you one.
How we work out if it is worth it for you
- You send 1 or 2 recent power bills for a free energy assessment. We look at your real usage, not a generic package.
- If you have no solar, we size solar and battery from your consumption. If you have solar that is not enough, we check what extra is needed. If your solar already covers the day, it may be battery only.
- We visit your home before any install to check the battery position, your switchboard and RCBOs, so there are no surprises on the day.
- The federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate is built into the design. See how the rebate steps down, and our rebate calculator.
Have solar already? Read adding a battery to existing solar. Unsure of the size? See battery sizing.

Questions we get asked
Is a home battery worth it without solar?
Usually a battery is most useful when there is spare solar to store, and the Australian Government says it is only useful if you have excess electricity to store. A battery without solar can still help with time-of-use rates or backup, so we look at it case by case.
Will a battery pay for itself?
The Australian Government says a battery may not pay itself off within its lifetime, and that the payback depends on many factors. We do not promise savings; we show you the design and the numbers from your bills.
Do I get a rebate on a battery?
Yes, if the battery and installation are eligible under the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program. We apply it at the point of sale and handle the paperwork. The value steps down on 1 January 2027 and 1 July 2027, by install date.
Can I pay for a battery with the NSW 0% loan?
Many NSW homeowners may be able to use the NSW Home Energy Saver loan. See our loan page for the details and the legal wording.
