Tesla Powerwall 2 vs Powerwall 3: what is the difference, and can I mix them?

Short answer. Both store 13.5 kWh under Tesla’s warranty and use the Tesla app. The main difference is that Powerwall 3 has a built-in solar inverter, so solar plugs straight into it, while Powerwall 2 is a battery added onto a separate solar inverter. Tesla says Powerwall 3 can be added to other Powerwall 3 units but not to a Powerwall 2, with a software update planned to allow combined operation.

Safety first. Never open a switchboard, remove a cover from your battery or inverter, or touch any wiring. Anything beyond the app, a light you can read from a safe distance, or your own router is a job for a licensed electrician. If you see smoke, smell burning, hear arcing or see water on or near the unit: keep everyone away, switch off at your main switch only if it is safe to do so, and call 000 if there is any fire or smoke.

The differences, from Tesla’s own pages

  • Solar inverter: Powerwall 3 has an integrated solar inverter for direct solar connection. Powerwall 2 is designed to be added to an existing solar system and works with all major inverter brands. Tesla says Powerwall 3 can also be added to existing solar.
  • Power: Tesla says one Powerwall 3 can supply more power than a Powerwall 2.
  • Capacity and warranty: Tesla’s Australian warranty gives both a 13.5 kWh starting capacity, with at least 70% of it retained at ten years, over a ten-year period.
  • Mixing: Powerwall 3 can be added to other Powerwall 3 batteries. Tesla says it cannot currently be added to Powerwall 2, and that a software update is coming to enable combined operation of Powerwall 2, Powerwall 3 and Powerwall 3 Expansion.
  • Lights: Powerwall 3 has a Tesla logo light that shows its state (solid white is normal, flashing red is an inverter fault); Powerwall 3 Expansion units have no light.

Which one do I have?

Look at the Tesla app under your system’s details, or at the label on the unit, and tell us what it says. We confirm the model on any service call or when we quote an expansion. Mixing generations is a question for us and Tesla together, so do not buy another unit before asking.

Which suits a new home battery?

For a new install the right choice comes down to your solar, your power bills and your backup needs. We design from your real bills and compare Tesla against Sigenergy, GoodWe, Sungrow and SolaX honestly: see Sigenergy vs GoodWe vs Tesla, Sungrow and Solax and our Powerwall owner guide.
