Estimate based on about $38 per certificate. The final figure depends on the battery's approved usable capacity, the certificate price on the day and the install date. We work out the exact figure in your quote. Battery must be a new, approved battery of 5 to 100 kWh nominal capacity connected to rooftop solar. Rebate shown before GST.

How much is the federal battery rebate in NSW? The Cheaper Home Batteries rebate takes about $258 off the price for each kWh of usable battery up to 14 kWh (today’s factor of 6.8, at about $38 per certificate). For a 16 kWh usable battery installed before 1 January 2027 that is about $3,910. The factor drops to 5.7 on 1 January 2027 and to 5.2 on 1 July 2027, so the same battery gets about $3,270 then. Pick your battery size and install date below for your own estimate.

The rebate is paid as small-scale technology certificates (STCs) under the Clean Energy Regulator’s Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. Your installer takes the value of those certificates off your price, so there is nothing for you to lodge. The more usable capacity your battery has, and the earlier it is installed, the more certificates it creates. We are Sun Connect Solar, a local Northern Rivers electrician-run team, and we build the rebate into every battery design and handle the paperwork.

How the federal battery rebate is worked out

The Clean Energy Regulator sets the method. Your battery’s usable capacity is counted in three bands, then multiplied by a factor that depends on the install date. The result is rounded down to a whole number of certificates.

    • First 14 kWh of usable capacity: counted at 100%.
    • 14 to 28 kWh: counted at 60%.
    • 28 to 50 kWh: counted at 15%.
    • Above 50 kWh: no further certificates.

The factor steps down every six months: 6.8 for installs up to 31 December 2026, 5.7 from 1 January 2027, 5.2 from 1 July 2027, then lower again each half-year to 2.1 in the second half of 2030.

    Rebate by battery size table

Usable battery size Installed in 2026 (factor 6.8) From 1 Jan 2027 (factor 5.7) From 1 Jul 2027 (factor 5.2)
    9 kWh 61 STCs 51 STCs 46 STCs
    13.5 kWh 91 STCs 76 STCs 70 STCs
    16 kWh 103 STCs 86 STCs 79 STCs
    18 kWh 111 STCs 93 STCs 85 STCs
    24 kWh 136 STCs 114 STCs 104 STCs
    27 kWh 148 STCs 124 STCs 113 STCs
    32 kWh 156 STCs 131 STCs 119 STCs
    36 kWh 160 STCs 134 STCs 122 STCs
    45 kWh 169 STCs 142 STCs 129 STCs
    54 kWh 174 STCs 146 STCs 133 STCs

At about $38 per certificate, 100 STCs is about $3,800. Batteries over 50 kWh get the same rebate as 50 kWh, so a 54 kWh stack earns the same certificates as a 50 kWh one.

Each certificate is worth roughly the STC market price on the day. The calculator above shows that as one estimated dollar figure, based on about $38 per certificate. The rebate only counts if the battery is on the Clean Energy Regulator’s approved list, is new, and is installed with rooftop solar, new or existing.

Our own installs are Sigenergy and GoodWe, plus Sungrow, Solax and Tesla. We check the exact model against the approved list before we design anything.

Rebate first, then the NSW 0% loan

For eligible NSW homeowners, the federal rebate comes off the price first. The NSW Home Energy Saver 0% interest loan, up to $15,000 over up to 10 years, can then cover much of what is left. Many customers get solar and a battery with no money down this way, and loan repayments are often offset by their power bill savings. Loans through Brighte. Eligibility criteria apply; subject to lender approval. See how the loan works.

    Battery rebate calculator FAQs

How much is the federal battery rebate?

It depends on the battery’s usable size, the install date and the STC price on the day. As a guide, a 16 kWh usable battery installed before 1 January 2027 creates 103 STCs. At about $38 per certificate that is about $3,910, taken off your price at point of sale. Use the calculator above for your own numbers.

How is the number of STCs worked out?

The Clean Energy Regulator counts the first 14 kWh of usable capacity at 100%, the next 14 kWh at 60% and the next 22 kWh (up to 50 kWh) at 15%, then multiplies by a factor set by the install date. The result is rounded down to a whole certificate. Capacity above 50 kWh earns nothing extra.

Why does the rebate drop on 1 January 2027?

The factor is set by the date the battery is installed, and it steps down every six months. It is 6.8 for installs up to 31 December 2026 and 5.7 from 1 January 2027, then 5.2 from 1 July 2027. A 16 kWh battery goes from 103 STCs to 86 STCs at the January step. An install before the end of December keeps the higher factor, subject to approvals such as the network operator’s sign-off.

Does the rebate apply if I already have solar?

Yes. The Cheaper Home Batteries Program applies to batteries connected to new or existing rooftop solar, so you can add a battery to the solar you already have. We check your inverter, switchboard and battery position on the site visit.

Can I combine the battery rebate with the NSW 0% loan?

For eligible NSW homeowners, yes. The rebate comes off first, then the NSW Home Energy Saver 0% interest loan (up to $15,000, up to 10 years) can cover much of the rest. Loans through Brighte. Eligibility criteria apply; subject to lender approval.

How accurate is this calculator, and do I have to apply myself?

It is an estimate. The exact figure depends on the battery’s approved usable capacity, the STC price on the day and the install date, and we work it out in your quote. You do not apply yourself: we handle the rebate paperwork and take the value off your price.
