Sungrow SBR vs SBH: what is the difference between the two batteries?

Short answer. Both are Sungrow high-voltage lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries made of stackable modules. The SBR uses 3.2 kWh modules (6.4 to 25.6 kWh in total, up to 30 A). The SBH uses 5.0 kWh modules (10 to 40 kWh in total, up to 50 A). Which suits you depends on your usage and the inverter, which we work out from your power bills.

Safety first. Never open a switchboard, remove a cover from your battery or inverter, or touch any wiring. Anything beyond the app, a light you can read from a safe distance, or your own router is a job for a licensed electrician. If you see smoke, smell burning, hear arcing or see water on or near the unit: keep everyone away, switch off at your main switch only if it is safe to do so, and call 000 if there is any fire or smoke.

Both can run up to four stacks in parallel on a compatible hybrid inverter, and both use plug-and-play modules with no cables between them. Some of the smallest SBR configurations are limited to particular Sungrow inverters, which is another reason to let us match the pair.

What this means for you

  • Smaller or step-by-step sizing: SBR’s 3.2 kWh steps give finer sizing between about 6 and 26 kWh.
  • Bigger households and higher loads: SBH’s larger modules and higher current rating suit bigger batteries and heavier loads.
  • Inverter match: each battery range works only with certain Sungrow hybrid inverters, so the inverter choice and the battery choice are made together.
  • Blackout backup: backup is decided by the inverter, its wiring and its settings; a typical install gives full home backup.

Sizing starts from your real bills, not a package. Our guides cover how big a battery you need and how the brands compare.

When to call us

If we installed your system, call us on 0483 903 020. Our service help for existing customers is free: we start by working through it with you by phone. If you are not yet a customer, a service call is $250 + GST, which covers one hour on site within 20 km of Mullumbimby; travel further out is quoted separately. Contact us or call 0483 903 020 (Mon-Fri 7am-6pm, Sat 7am-4pm). We do not repair systems we did not install.

Quick questions

Which is better, Sungrow SBR or SBH?

Neither is simply better. They suit different sizes: SBR steps up in 3.2 kWh modules, SBH in 5.0 kWh modules with a higher current rating. We pick from your real usage and the inverter, not from the model name.

Can I mix SBR and SBH modules?

No. They are different ranges with different module sizes and are not designed to be mixed. Ask us before adding anything to an existing Sungrow battery.

Do SBR and SBH use the same app?

Yes. Both are monitored through Sungrow’s iSolarCloud app and website via the hybrid inverter.

Do they both work as blackout backup?

Backup depends on the Sungrow hybrid inverter and how it is wired and set, not only the battery. A typical install gives full home backup, running all circuits unless you ask us to leave some out. We confirm this at the site visit.
