A long row of AIKO Neostar solar panels on a metal roof above gardens and neighbouring homes in Mullumbimby, part of a 12.25 kW install by Sun Connect Solar

Making the most of an awkward roof

Not every roof faces north. This one had good faces, a south-facing face, and a studio out the back. The design used all three: panels straight onto the sunny faces, 12 tilt frames lifting 11 panels on the south roof up towards the north, and five panels on the studio roof with a DC cable run back to the main house. The old system came off and was disposed of properly.

Mullumbimby roofs

Older Mullumbimby homes often sit at odd angles to the street, with roofs facing every direction among the palms. Tilt frames and second roofs are how we get a good system onto them. More Mullumbimby jobs: a 16 kWh Sigenergy battery and a 24 kWh battery with smart load control.

Questions we get asked

Can panels go on a south-facing roof?

They can, but they make less. Here 11 panels on the south roof sit on tilt frames that turn them up towards the north, so they catch far more sun. See how big a solar system do I need.

Can panels on a studio or shed join the house system?

Yes. On this job five panels went on the studio roof, with a DC cable run back to the inverter at the main house.

Why a hybrid inverter with no battery?

A Sigenergy hybrid inverter takes battery modules later without being replaced. See adding a battery later.

What happened to the old system?

It came off and was disposed of properly at no cost.
