Tesla Powerwall 3 vs Sigenergy SigenStor: how do they compare for a Northern Rivers home?
Both are good, well-made home batteries, and we install both. Powerwall 3 is a single 13.5 kWh unit with a built-in solar inverter; Sigenergy’s SigenStor is a modular all-in-one built from separate battery modules. Which suits you depends on your solar, your usage and your backup needs.

How they are built
- Powerwall 3: one wall-mounted unit with 13.5 kWh usable energy and an integrated solar inverter. Tesla’s datasheet lists up to 20 kW of solar input and an output that can be set at 5, 10 or 11.04 kW. It is rated IP55 for the enclosure and IP67 for the battery and power electronics, indoor or outdoor.
- SigenStor: an inverter and energy-management unit stacked with Sigenergy battery modules (the manual lists 5 kWh and 8 kWh modules), so capacity is chosen by the number of modules. The battery pack has a built-in heating feature that switches on automatically in cold conditions.
Growing the system later
Tesla says Powerwall 3 systems can add further Powerwall 3 units and Powerwall 3 Expansion units, up to seven units in total, though the maximum can vary by market. Sigenergy grows by adding modules. If an EV, a pool or a growing family is coming, we design the headroom in from the start.
Blackout backup
Both can back up the home. Tesla uses a Backup Gateway to switch the home off the grid; Sigenergy’s manual describes whole-home and partial-home backup networks that use a gateway. Our typical install backs up the whole home unless you ask us to leave circuits out. What actually runs, and for how long, comes down to the unit’s power limit, its charge and your loads. See whole home vs essential circuits.
App and day-to-day control
Powerwall is run through the Tesla app (Backup Reserve, Time-Based Control, Storm Watch). SigenStor is run through mySigen. See our owner guides: Tesla Powerwall, mySigen app.
Warranty
Tesla’s Australian warranty runs ten years, with at least 70% of the 13.5 kWh retained at ten years, and depends on the unit staying registered and connected for updates. The Sigenergy and Powerwall batteries we install carry a 10-year battery warranty; our own 25-year workmanship warranty covers our installation work only.
Which suits whom
- Existing solar you want to keep, or you want the Tesla app and gear: Powerwall is designed to be added to existing solar (Tesla says it works with all major inverter brands).
- Solar and battery together with room to grow module by module, and detailed monitoring: SigenStor is built for that.
- Whichever you choose, we size from your real bills first: see battery sizing.
We are a Sigenergy-approved installer and accredited for Tesla, and we do not push one brand. Read more: Sigenergy batteries and Tesla Powerwall.
Why locals choose us
- Our own in-house team designs every system and does every install. 25 years in solar and large commercial electrical work. No subcontractors.
- A face-to-face site visit before every install: compliant battery position, switchboard and RCBO check, no surprises on the day.
- SAA-accredited installer and Sigenergy-approved, with a 25-year workmanship warranty on our installation work.
Questions we get asked
Which is better, Powerwall 3 or Sigenergy?
Neither is simply better. Powerwall 3 is a single 13.5 kWh unit with a built-in solar inverter; SigenStor is a modular all-in-one. We recommend one after reading your bills and looking at your existing solar.
Does Powerwall 3 work with my existing solar?
Tesla says Powerwall 3 can be added to existing solar and works with all major inverter brands, with limits on the size of AC-coupled solar in the backup circuit. We check yours at the site visit.
Can I add more capacity later?
Yes with both, within each maker’s limits: more Powerwall 3 or Expansion units, or more Sigenergy modules. We design for it if you expect your needs to grow.
Do both get the federal battery rebate?
We build the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate into every eligible design and check the exact model is on the approved list before it goes in your proposal.
