How does grid connection work for solar and a battery in NSW?

Getting solar switched on is more than install day. In NSW the Australian Government lists four steps: a network connection application that must be approved before install, the installation, a smart meter installed or configured, then your green light to switch on. We handle the application and the chasing, and keep you informed.

The steps in NSW

  1. Network connection application: lodged by your installer with your electricity network, and approved before the system goes in. In some areas, the government notes, a connection agreement can take up to 30 business days.
  2. Installation: see what happens on install day.
  3. Smart meter: installed or configured, often after install day. With solar you need one. There may be a charge if it involves switchboard upgrades.
  4. Switch on: once you receive confirmation that the meter is ready, your installer tells you to turn the system on.

What the connection agreement can limit

It can include a limit on inverter size or on how much you can export. See solar export limits in the Northern Rivers and what is my export limit with Essential Energy?. You can find your network under Faults and Emergencies on your bill; much of our area is served by Essential Energy.

How long does it take?

For our customers, grid connection typically follows the install by 1 to 3 weeks, depending on the network. We stay in touch and finish with a sign-off call.

Upgrades first

Sometimes the switchboard or meter board needs work before solar, for example an old board with asbestos, or no RCBOs. We find this at the site visit so it is in your quote. See switchboard upgrades and RCBOs.

Why locals choose us

  • A face-to-face site visit before every install: compliant battery position, switchboard and RCBO check, no surprises on the day.
  • SAA-accredited installer and Sigenergy-approved, with a 25-year workmanship warranty on our installation work.

Questions we get asked

Do I apply to the network myself?

No. We lodge the application for you.

Can I turn the system on after install day?

Not until the meter is ready and you are told. Wait for confirmation before switching on.

Why is there a wait after install?

The smart meter and network approvals take time. It varies by area.

Can the design change after I sign?

Yes, for network, availability or site-visit reasons. We explain any change and its cost in writing before the install.
