How do I safely shut down and restart my Sigenergy battery?

Short answer. Sigenergy’s official owner method is the app: tap Setting in mySigen to turn the device off or on. Its other method means removing the covers and operating the unit’s own switches, which is for a licensed electrician only.

Most of the time you never need to do this. A restart is not a fix for an alarm or fault, and a battery that shows a fault should be looked at by us rather than switched off and on repeatedly.

Safety first. Never open a switchboard, remove a cover from your battery or inverter, or touch any wiring. Anything beyond the app, a light you can read from a safe distance, or your own router is a job for a licensed electrician. If you see smoke, smell burning, hear arcing or see water on or near the unit: keep everyone away, switch off at your main switch only if it is safe to do so, and call 000 if there is any fire or smoke.

Turning it off and on from the app

  1. Open the mySigen app and log in.
  2. Tap Setting and find the option to turn the device off or on. Sigenergy’s manual says: tap Setting in the mySigen app to turn on or off the device.
  3. After turning it off, wait at least 10 seconds before turning it on again. Sigenergy’s manual asks for an interval of more than 10 seconds between power-off and power-on.
  4. Check the app shows the system running again and the energy-flow picture is updating.

If you cannot find the option, or the screen looks different to what is described, do not go looking for switches on the unit. Call us.

What we do not ask owners to do

Sigenergy’s manual also describes a manual method that begins by removing the side and top decorative covers, turning off the connected switch in the backup distribution panel and turning the unit’s DC switch off, then waiting the time shown on the unit’s label. That is installer work. Please do not attempt it.

Emergencies

From Sigenergy’s manual: in a fire or flood, if it is safe, shut down the equipment or turn off the main power switch, keep away from the battery, and call the fire brigade (000) if a fire is spreading. If a battery has been under water, dropped or hit, or smells or leaks, do not touch it and call a professional. Do not use the equipment again until we have checked it.

If it turns itself off

Sigenergy says that after a long period of inactivity, such as being offline for several days or very few operating hours, the system sends a reminder, and if there is no response it may turn itself off as a safety measure. To get it going again, contact us.

Quick questions

How long should I wait before turning it back on?

Sigenergy’s manual asks for more than 10 seconds between turning it off and on.

Will switching it off damage the battery?

The app method is the one Sigenergy gives to owners. Using the unit’s own switches in the wrong order is what we want to avoid, which is why that is left to us.

Is it safe to switch off at the main switch in a storm?

If there is any fire, smoke or water near the unit, and it is safe to reach, yes: switch off at your main switch, keep away and call 000 if there is fire or smoke. Otherwise call us.

Should I restart it every time the app says offline?

No. Check your Wi-Fi first. Our Wi-Fi guide covers it.
