How do I reconnect my GoodWe ESA battery to Wi-Fi (SEMS+ app)?

Short answer. Reconnecting a GoodWe ESA uses Bluetooth through the SEMS+ app (Service, then Local Access) and a local-access login that we give you, onto a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. Check the quick things below first, then call us and we will talk you through it.

Your GoodWe keeps working when it is offline, but it is best connected so you can see it in SEMS+. A new router, a changed Wi-Fi name or a new password is the usual reason it drops off.

Safety first. Do not hold down any button on the small Wi-Fi stick or press and hold the battery button. Never open a switchboard, remove a cover from your battery or inverter, or touch any wiring. Anything beyond the app, a light you can read from a safe distance, or your own router is a job for a licensed electrician. If you see smoke, smell burning, hear arcing or see water on or near the unit: keep everyone away, switch off at your main switch only if it is safe to do so, and call 000 if there is any fire or smoke.

Check these first

  • Is your internet working on other devices? Restarting your own router is safe, and GoodWe suggests it if the stick cannot connect.
  • Is your Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz? GoodWe’s Wi-Fi/LAN Kit-20 supports 2.4 GHz only, not 5 GHz.
  • Is the network name and password exactly as before? If your router is far from the unit, GoodWe suggests moving the router closer or adding a Wi-Fi repeater, and reducing the number of devices on the router.
  • Have a look at the light on the little Wi-Fi stick (the WiFi/LAN Kit-20): steady on means all good. 2 blinks means it cannot reach your router. 4 blinks means it is on your router but cannot reach GoodWe’s server. Off means it is restarting or has no power. Just read it; please do not touch it.

What the official reconnect involves

From GoodWe’s SEMS+ and ESA manuals, reconnecting after a router or password change goes like this:

  1. Stand near the unit with Bluetooth on your phone and SEMS+ installed.
  2. In SEMS+ tap Service, then Local Access, choose the Bluetooth tab and tap Search Device.
  3. Pick your device by serial number. The Wi-Fi stick shows as “WLA-” followed by the serial number.
  4. Log in with the local-access password. This is the step where we help: we give you the login and stay on the phone.
  5. Open the network settings and choose your home 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network, then enter its password.
  6. Check the light on the stick goes steady on.

Some of these steps need the stick’s Bluetooth switched on with a quick double-press of its button, and the manual warns that holding that button for several seconds resets or factory-resets the stick. That is why we do this one with you.

If SEMS+ shows an app-side problem: login failed means check your phone’s internet and try later (the app may be under maintenance); the unit’s Wi-Fi not showing means check the stick has power and refresh the list; failed to get data means check the unit to router and router to internet connections.

Quick questions

Will my GoodWe battery still work while it is offline?

Yes. You just cannot see it in SEMS+. It is best to reconnect it so you can monitor it and receive any prompts.

Can I use 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

No. GoodWe’s Wi-Fi stick supports 2.4 GHz only.

What if the stick light is blinking twice?

Two blinks means the stick is not connected to your router. Check the router is on and the Wi-Fi name and password have not changed, then call us.

Should I press the button on the stick?

Please do not. GoodWe says holding the button for 6 to 20 seconds restores the stick to factory settings. Call us and we will guide you.
