GoodWe ESA vs Sungrow SBH: how do the two home batteries compare?
The GoodWe ESA is an all-in-one unit with its own battery modules and a backup output; the Sungrow SBH is a stack of 5.0 kWh battery modules that pairs with a separate Sungrow hybrid inverter. Both are well-regarded lithium iron phosphate systems, and we install both.

Side by side
- GoodWe ESA: an all-in-one energy storage system. GoodWe’s manual says the system supports 5 to 108 kWh, with a single column stacking up to six batteries and expansion kits for more. The unit has a BACK-UP port for blackout loads. It is run in the SEMS+ app. Our install uses the ESA with 8 kWh battery modules.
- Sungrow SBH: 5.0 kWh modules, two to eight per stack (10 to 40 kWh), up to four stacks in parallel, up to 50 A, IP55, paired with a compatible Sungrow hybrid inverter and run in iSolarCloud.
What this means in practice
- Simplicity: the ESA is one system from one maker. Sungrow is a battery and an inverter chosen together.
- Positioning: the GoodWe ESA is our mid-tier option, very high quality, for getting the outcome you need at a lower price point. Sungrow is one of the other brands we fit when it suits a home.
- Backup: both can back up the whole home, wired through the backup output or inverter. We set it up with you at the site visit and test the switch-over.
- Export limits: the ESA has a charging mode designed for export-limited sites; see export-limit settings by brand.
- Warranty: a 10-year battery warranty on the batteries we install, subject to each maker’s conditions, plus our 25-year workmanship warranty on our installation work.
We size from your bills first: what size battery do I need? See also GoodWe batteries, Sungrow batteries and the SBH owner guide.

Questions we get asked
Is the GoodWe ESA cheaper than Sungrow?
We do not quote prices online because every system is sized to the home. We give you a straight comparison for yours.
Which has more capacity?
Both scale well beyond what most homes need. We size from your actual usage, not the largest possible.
Do I need a new inverter with either?
The ESA includes its own inverter; Sungrow needs a compatible Sungrow hybrid inverter. If you already have solar we check what can be kept.
Can I add modules later?
Both are modular, within each maker’s limits and procedures. Call us before adding anything, because wrong expansion can affect the warranty.
