Do solar panels work on cloudy, wet days in the Northern Rivers?
Yes, panels still generate on cloudy and rainy days, just less. The Australian Government says panels respond to both direct sunlight and the diffuse light reflected from clouds and the atmosphere, and are usually able to generate some electricity even on a cloudy day. Most is produced on clear days.

What to expect in wet weather
- Output drops on heavy cloud and rain, and more in winter when the sun is lower.
- Across a year, a system makes less than its rated size suggests; the government says 1 kW of panels typically makes between 3.5 and 5 kWh a day in Australia depending on location, slope and direction.
- Rain helps: most panels sit at 10 degrees or more, so they largely self-clean in the rain.
What a wet week means for your system design
Northern Rivers weather can bring several grey days in a row. That is why we size solar and battery from your real bills and not a generic package. A battery stores sunny-day power for the evening, but it cannot make power on a long wet stretch, so off-grid homes are sized for winter and wet weeks. See off-grid solar and off-grid battery days of autonomy.
Installing and checking in wet weather
Roof work in the rain is a safety risk, so installs can be delayed. See our install day guide and what to check if your solar is not producing.
Shading from trees can matter more than cloud. Read cleaning and shading.

Questions we get asked
Do solar panels work in the rain?
Yes, they produce some power in the rain from diffuse light, just less than on a clear day.
Do panels work at night?
No. A battery lets you use stored solar at night.
How do I know if my system is working on a cloudy day?
Check your monitoring app. If it is low on sunny days, something may be wrong: see our troubleshooting guide.
